So being the man that I am, I have stumbled across a lot of films that are worse then sub-par, worse than terrible, just plain bad films.  This one starts off very promising.  It really does.  This movie is called The Den and is a psychological thriller about the risks of sites like chat roulette and omegle.  That's a totally admirable thing to be warning people about.  Much like that film, I'm also here on a mission to warn you.  Warn you away from ever thinking that, from a film stand point, this film would be good.  Sure its thrilling.  But it also has more then one very evident plot hole that honestly makes me pretty frustrated to look back on.  I guess the easiest way to explain this movie is to break it down.
It starts off with this girl, Elizabeth, trying to get a study shes doing approved so she can be on a social networking site called "the den" and get paid for it.  She runs the idea by her professor and a couple of other professors and they approve it for a grant.  I guess that means her dreams are coming true, they're going to pay her to be a more then normal attractive female on a chat roulette website, what could go wrong?
WELL the first or second thing you see is a guy doing helicopter schlong camera.  She doesn't change right away so you get a good five seconds of penis before it stops.  Early on you can tell its gonna be an issue shes doing this cause her boyfriend just does not approve.  Her friend who is conveniently a hacker lets her know some risks or whatever and we're off! The first time she does this with a friend there is a picture of a girl, and its just a picture.  They disconnect, and almost immediately they're reconnected with the same picture of a face who says some rude things and then disconnects.  Already.  Already I would think that its creepy that of all the MILLIONS of people that are shown to be on this site, you disconnect and immediately reconnect with this person.  First qualm with this film.  This is how shes picked to be killed or whatever by this "Group."
So, after this the movie just starts going downhill, her boyfriend sneaks over to have some adult time with her, someone hacks into her computer records it and sends it to all the professors.  Issue number 2.  It takes these professors 3 or 4 days to respond to this email.  If i was paying someone to sit on their computer all day, I'd check their emails probably immediately.  This chick see's someone get murdered and she shows the cops.  The response is what made me realize that I hate this movie. The head detective looked her directly in the eye and said "99% of the time, this kind of thing is fake.  We aren't even gonna look into it unless there is anymore proof.  Don't worry about it."  SHE JUST WATCHED SOMEONE GET MURDERED.  Even one of her friends says not to worry.  Then he says he'll reverse follow the IP address.  Which just so happens to be bouncing off of everything so he cant find it.  Another issue.  They steal her computer.  Which would definitely have a definitive IP address.  Just trace it? I guess? Oh and also, the moment I witness someone get murdered and people hack my computer.  I'm buying a gun, and moving to a new state.
Eventually the boyfriend goes missing, and she finds a picture of a face in the last video call she had with him (Because thats all there is in this movie) and she "Forgot" to back up her hard drive.  The cops still dont care, and think it has nothing to do with anything.  THEN.  Her friend goes missing, and the cops are like. MEH.
What kind of place is this that all this happens and no one even cares.  GETS BETTER.  The friend shows up.  In her house.  With her wrists cut.  AFTER MESSAGING THE MAIN CHARACTER TO COME OVER.  LUL WUT. they literally don't even question it.  THEY. DONT. QUESTION. ANYTHING.  It takes this girls sister being kidnapped for them to realize that like, she wasn't lying.  Oh, and elizabeth bought a gun, but doesn't think to carry it with her, or do anything with it.  She goes back home and watches a cop get murdered.  Then opens her door to another murdered cop.  Then I completely fell out.  The moment these people killed a detective and a normal cop, They done messed up big.  No matter how secretive they keep things. they cannot cover up TWO cops being killed.  There is no way.
She wakes up with a camera like super glued or some crap to her forehead.  She sees her boyfriend getting his ass beat by one guy.  Then her hacker friend shows up, and shes sees him get murdered.  Now is when the movie absolutely blows.  SHE overpowers one of these guys.  Her boyfriend is literally doing nothing.  She on the otherhand, wakes up, forehead bloody from the camera grafting, and destroys some guy.  She goes on the run and finds a hammer. A HAMMER. Just goes to town man! Kills like five of them! Her boyfriend did nothing! she gets outside, and gets in a car.  LOW AND BEHOLD SHE CRASHES.  Then the movie tries to make the ending cool, and it falls flat.  Some chick who she talked to earlier stumbles upon her profile, and asks if her camera is broken.  She then is forced to watch elizabeth get hung. right before she dies, they cut the rope.  Then they shoot her in the head. After that the movie shows some guy watching it on a snuf porn site.  And the girl who was forced to watch that snuff film is also on it.
All in all I give this movie a big old 2 out of 10.  It was so incredibly bland it isn't even funny. If you can avoid it, I would avoid it.
